World of Goo is a physics based puzzle / construction game.

world-of-goo-gioco-di-costruzioni-ingegnoso-e-L-mhVD_GWorld of Goo is a physics-based puzzlegame by 2D Boy, an independent game developer consisting of Kyle Gabler and Ron Carmel, both former Electronic Arts employees, released for Linux, Android and WiiWare.

It was nominated for the Seumas McNally grand prize, Design Innovation Award, and Technical Excellence at the Independent Games Festival, and has gone on to win several other gaming awards since its release.

The game is built around the idea of creating large structures using balls of goo.The game is divided into five chapters, each containing several levels. Each level has its own graphic and musical theme, giving it unique atmosphere.

There is also a bonus meta-game called World of Goo Corporation, where the objective is to build the highest tower using goo balls which the player collected through the course of the game. Players from all over the world can compete, as the height of the tower and number of goo balls used are being constantly uploaded to the 2D Boy server.
WorldOfGooBuilding
Objective.
The main objective of the game is to get a requisite number of goo balls to a pipe representing the exit. In order to do so, the player must use the goo balls to construct bridges, towers, and other structures to overcome gravity and various terrain difficulties such as chasms, hills, spikes, windmills, or cliffs. There are several types of goo balls in the game, each of which has unique properties.

The player must exploit combinations of these goo balls in order to complete each level. Extra goos recovered in the pipe are pumped through to the World of Goo Corporation, a sandbox area where the objective is to compete with other players worldwide by building the tallest tower possible.

Players can also try to achieve the "Obsessive Completion Distinction Flag" for each level by completing the level under more stringent criteria, such as collecting a larger number of Goo balls, finishing under a set amount of time or using as few moves as possible.

The WiiWare version includes multiplayer with up to four people on the same Wii. This facility is also available, albeit unsupported, in the Linux port.
world-of-goo
Levels.
World of Goo is split up into four chapters and an epilogue, each containing a number of levels. The chapters are set over the course of one year in the World of Goo. Each chapter takes place over one season, beginning in the start of summer, and ending at the end of spring the next year.

The 4th chapter is seasonless, and is set in a virtual world. Levels and chapters in the game are interspersed with cut scenes.

An additional 'chapter' selectable from the main menu is the World Of Goo Corporation. Goos collected above and beyond the required amount to pass a level are piped out of each of the played levels to here. Starting from just a single triangle of Goo, the aim is to build the highest possible tower. The Goos in the World of Goo Corporation are unique in that they can be repositioned like Ivy Goos but are black and can only form two connections at once like Common Goos.

In the World of Goo Corporation, towers built by other players of the game are represented by clouds bearing the player's name, nationality and height of the tower, including details on the total number of balls collected by the player and how many were used in constructing their tower. The altitude of each cloud represents the height of that player's tower. An online leaderboard charts the heights of the top 50 towers, as well as the top 10 players for each level of the game.
There are a total of 48 levels in the game, including World of Goo Corporation.
In an interview the developers stated that the retail version released in Europe would receive an additional sixth chapter, set on the Moon.

Few details were disclosed, but reportedly this chapter would have featured a freeform sandbox mode, similar to that of the World of Goo Corporation. This addition was, however, canceled for Wii when 2D Boy announced they were releasing the game on WiiWare in Europe.

    · Lots of gibs and shrapnel (all cartoonish, though)

It is NOT a VRML2 world system (there are fundamental computer graphics reasons why VRML worlds will always be slow), though there are plans to include VRML2 as a world data format.

Features include: Multiplayer Client-Server architecture, Editable worlds and textures, and projectile weapons.

Obsidian is now a parked project, and no further work will be done on it. Feel free to use this code and study the thinking behind it, but we do NOT advise using it as the basis for any virtual world projects you may have in mind.

    Features.
        Multiplayer Client-Server architecture
Generic TCP/IP hence works natively across the Internet
Full 3D headsup with texture mapping
Runs acceptably on a 486, screams on a Pentium
        Editable worlds and textures
Supports some forms of IMPOSSIBLE ARCHITECTURE (eg. rooms that are bigger inside than out, corridors that curve back on themselves)
        Inter-player communications
Projectile weapons (rudimentary, anybody is welcome to add more spectacular violence if they can)
We have decided to make the source code available for those who are interested in compiling it up and having a play with it. Feel free to send in any improvements, patches, or bugfixes you may make.
Remember that for all Obsidian's sophistication, this is Alpha code. It is not yet an RPM or other standard install, though we are trying to make it as nice at this stage as possible.

  • Click HERE TO DOWNLOAD the latest SOURCE tree (600 k).

  • You'll need a linux machine with svgalib (see below for other platforms) and the "dialog" utility to get it up and running, and many linux distributions have these (or else they are quick to obtain). We used RedHat 4.1 (Vanderbilt) Linux on our development machines.

  • Click here for REDHAT 5.x PATCH (1k). This patch, the work of Richard Lyons, will be incorporated into the archive at some point. This patch makes the tree more "generic" and may help people compiling under various Linux distributions.
  • SLACKWARE Users' note:
Andrew Donkin reports the following: I tried building Obsidian on my Slackware 3.something box, and found a clash with the GTK/Gimp glib.h.
It first appeared while compiling glib/graphics.c
      The easiest solution was
      mv /usr/local/include/glib.h /usr/local/include/glib.h.old
...before trying to build Obsidian. A cleaner solution, I guess, would be to swap the order of "-I/usr/local/include -I../include".
Other than that, it built fine.
  • When mailing code to us, be sure to quote the full source version number and the name and number of any patches you have applied.

  • Notes.
    • Obsidian is governed by the Obsidian Artistic License.
    • This is alpha code, it may crash. We take NO responsibility for it. Just like any other software producer. We have tried to make it run as nicely as possible, but it is using svgalib calls so if it does lock you could lose the console.
    • The "obsidian" script that starts the client in an easy to use manner requires the "dialog" program to be installed, which comes with the standard RedHat distribution. If you can't find "dialog", inspect the contents of the "obsidian" script to see how to run the client from the command line (its easy!).
    • We have included the source code to the TYPHOON database engine, by Thomas B. Pedersen, which is required to compile Obsidian.

1.- XBoard is a very old chess interface, it's not very fancy, or flashy, but it has all the basic features of a modern chess program.

XBoard is a graphical user interface for chess in all its major forms, including international chess, xiangqi (Chinese chess), shogi (Japanese chess) and Makruk, in addition to many minor variants such as Losers Chess, Crazyhouse, Chess960 and Capablanca Chess.
It displays a chessboard on the screen, accepts moves made with the mouse, and loads and saves games in Portable Game Notation (PGN). It serves as a front-end for many different chess services, including:
Chess engines that will run on your machine and play a game against you or help you analyze, such as GNU Chess, Crafty, or many others.
Chess servers on the Internet, where you can connect to play chess with people from all over the world, watch other users play, or just hang out and chat.
Correspondence chess played by electronic mail. The CMail program automates the tasks of parsing email from your opponent, playing his moves out on your board, and mailing your reply move after you've chosen it.

By default, Ubuntu comes with glChess, part of the GNOME game suite. It uses the venerable and solid GNUChess engine, but the 2D graphics, while functional, lack the flash common in modern computer chess games.

There are three boards, stacked vertically; 96 pieces of which most are the traditional chess pieces with just a couple of additions; 26 possible directions in which to move. The AI isn't wonderful, but provides a challenging enough game to all but the most highly skilled players.
3D Chess is an odd, yet interesting game. You have three boards upon which to play, a few new pieces, and no manual to tell me how the new pieces work!!! But this game looks quite cool though, a bit like chess in Star Trek. All it needs is a manual or a link to a website containing documentation. Also, there is no AI to handle this game, so you must have another person to play with. I also like the board names which are x, y, and z.

The focus is on tactics rather than reaction and button mashing. The game features physics, full dismemberment, decapitation and comic style blood. Lovely!
The basic aim of the game is to fight the opponent, scoring points for damage. Some limbs break easier then others, others give more points when hit. To get more points, each joint can be relaxed, contracted, extended or held. This makes the gameplay very open-ended as there are no set moves, although many people will copy a move which seems to work well.

AmphetamineAmphetamine is a cool Jump'n Run adventure game witch offers some unique visual effects Amphetamine was created by Jonas Spillmann.

I ported it from Windows to Linux. It will also work under some versions of Solaris on SPARC. The current version uses SDL.

The Unix/SDL version is maintained by Lukas Loehrer.

    Controls:
    left/right arrows move
    left control fire
    space bar jump
    tab action (press buttons)
    ESC menu
    ALT+s screenshot
You can customize most controls by copying the file user.conf from the Amphetamine data directory to your ~/.amph directory. Modify it to suit your needs.

    Gameplay:
Many aspect of the gameplay are controlled by the file amph.conf in the main Amphetamine directory. Of most interest are the options right at the beginning of the file that control the physics. If the game seems to slow/fast to you, changing some of those values may help.

    DGA Mode:
Use the option --fullscreen to enable DGA fullscreen support. I cannot test this myself, because my X Server does not support it properly. I am grateful for any feedback regarding this option.

    Requirements:
    · Simple Direct Layer (SDL) v1.0 or newer

    Installation:
    1. Make sure SDL is installed correctly.
    2. Have a look at the 'Makefile' and edit it where appropriate.
    - 'USE_LIB_XPM=FALSE' if you don't have libXpm
    3. Type 'make'. This should build the Amphetamine binary. You can safely ignore the numerous warnings. If the compilation fails, you are in in trouble. Try to tweak the 'Makefile'. You have to delete '-funroll-loops' if you are still using gcc 2.7.2.3
    4. Become root and type 'make install'. This will install the binary to the directory specified in the makefile (default is '/usr/local/games/amph'). It will also create a symbolic link.
    5. You have managed the difficult bit. Now, you have to install the data files required by the game. Get 'amphetamine-${VERSION}.tar.bz' an do:
    - cd /usr/local/games
    - bzip2 -cd ~/amphetamine-data-0.8.tar.bz | tar xv
(Note: the exact commands depend on your syste configuration)
    6. type 'amph' in order to run the game and have fun!

Penumbra: Overture is a first person adventure game which focuses on story, immersion and puzzles.

Penumbra Overture is a first person adventure game which focuses on story, immersion and puzzles. Instead of using violence to progress the player has to use his/her wits to guide Philip on his quest to unravel the past
    Story.
Like all good nightmares, Philip's begins with something all too real - his mother's death. The days following the funeral are characterized by nothing, save for an incessant feeling of abandonment. Until, that is, he receives a letter from a dead man.

Philip's father left before he was born, taking his reasons with him. Now, here he is, opening up the door from beyond the grave. That door leads to more questions, and those questions lead to Greenland. Philip follows the clues - they're all he has left.
On leaving the final signs of human civilization behind him, in search of the location mentioned in his father's ambiguous notes, Philip wonders if he's left some part of his humanity behind as well. Soon, that will be the least of his fears.

Now, Philip needs your help. He's found an inexplicable metal hatch, in the middle of a frozen wasteland. Inside, is something yet more unfathomable.
    Step into the unknown.
    The Game.
Penumbra is a first person horror adventure focussing on story, immersion and puzzle solving. Violence and combat is hardly an option - the player has to use wits to guide Philip through his final test, and this makes the series unique in offering a truly dangerous and terrifying experience.
    penumbra1
Played from a first person perspective and powered by a 3D engine utilising cutting edge technology, Penumbra is a true advancement to the adventure genre. The unique physics system allows for true environmental interaction: The player can open drawers, pull levers, pick up objects and manipulate those objects in 3D space - all using natural mouse movements, creating a highly interactive and immersive game world.

The Penumbra series' central character, Philip, is realistically vulnerable, while enemies are fierce and intelligent. Any object can be picked up and thrown in defence, but the end result might only be to buy some time, or more likely, anger enemies further. Avoiding, outwitting and sneaking past enemies entirely provide the best chance of survival.

Penumbra will put players on edge like never before as they explore bizarre and mysterious environments, the unknown awaiting them behind every corner. The world is detailed both in terms of graphical fidelity and narrative character - The Penumbra Series is a horrific experience that will grip players from its opening thrills to it chilling denouement.
    penumbra overture start
While the game received mostly favorable reviews, it was criticized on a number of fronts, especially for its rather crude combat system and sometimes confusing or poorly implemented story elements, causing Eurogamer to comment that the game would "do better if it relied on its own inherent spookiness rather than trying to create artificial atmosphere by banging on about a character we don't have any real reason to care about, something about his dad, destiny and miners writing stupidly long notes to themselves about their imminent horrible deaths." It did however praise the character of Red, stating that he was "the most compelling element of the narrative, and wonderfully acted."

GameSpot in its review commented on the combat by saying that fights are often "so frenetic that it's almost impossible to control your movements" and that "it would have been much more sensible for the camera to lock on and move with enemies." It did however note that it did help differentiate Overture from more action oriented titles, saying that the "end result of the difficult combat is that you feel like an average Joe who wants to avoid zombie dogs with glowing eyes, not a video game superman out to stack dead canines like cordwood.

    Linux Minimum Requirements:

    • Transcend Game

Transcend can best be described as retro-style, abstract, 2D shooter. The graphics are geometrical, and the pace is sometimes frenzied. Two features set Transcend apart from other games. First, its dynamic graphical engine, which can smoothly morph from one complex shape to another, produces striking displays. Combining these dynamic shapes with subtle randomizations makes each play through a Transcend level visually different from the last. The second novel feature is Transcend's musical power-up system. As you play through a level, you are simultaneously assembling an abstract visual collage and arranging a unique piece of music. Transcend merges video games with pure art---it can be viewed either as a game or as a multimedia sculpture.

    • Tunnel

Tunnel is a game in which you control a capsule going down a tunnel, shooting other balls in the way. Tunnel is free software released under the GPL. The game has been tested on GNU/Linux and Windows.

New version of the popular MAME emulator recreational games.

    0

mame1_thumb2MAME (an acronym of Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator) is an emulator application designed to recreate the hardware of arcade game systems in software on modern personal computers and other platforms. The intention is to preserve gaming history by preventing vintage games from being lost or forgotten. The aim of MAME is to be a reference to the inner workings of the emulated arcade machines; the ability to actually play the games is considered "a nice side effect".

The first public MAME release (0.1) was on February 5, 1997, by Nicola Salmoria. The emulator now supports over seven thousand unique games and ten thousand actual ROM image sets, though not all of the supported games are playable. The project is currently maintained by MESS project leader, Miodrag Milanovic.

The original program code and graphics and sound data need to be present so that the game can be emulated. In most arcade machines, the data is stored in read-only memory chips (ROMs), although other devices such as cassette tapes, floppy disks, hard disks, laserdiscs, and compact discs are also used.

    mame-25.jpg_thumb2

The contents of most of these devices can be copied to computer files, in a process called "dumping". The resulting files are often generically called ROM images or ROMs regardless of the kind of storage they came from. A game usually consists of multiple ROM and PAL images; these are collectively stored inside a single ZIP file, constituting a ROM set.

    Mame1

In addition to the "parent" ROM set (usually chosen as the most recent "World" version of the game), games may have "clone" ROM sets with different program code, different language text intended for different markets etc. For example, Street Fighter II Turbo is considered a variant of Street Fighter II Champion Edition. System boards like the Neo Geo that have ROMs shared between multiple games require the ROMs to be stored in "BIOS" ROM sets and named appropriately.

    mame_thumb2

Individual ROM files are often named after labels found on the ROM chips and the position they are located on the board in the format "label.position". Sega for example use a standard labeling scheme for all the ROMs found on their arcade boards giving each unique ROM chip a unique label. "mpr12380.b2" is a ROM from the Golden Axe romset. This implies that the ROM was labeled "mpr12380" and located in position "b2" on the PCB. By using such a naming scheme it makes it easy to use MAME to identify, and often help repair, non-working PCBs.

Hard disks, CDs and laserdiscs are stored in a MAME-specific but documented format called the CHD (Compressed Hunks of Data). Some arcade machines use analog hardware, such as laserdiscs, to store and play back audio/video data such as soundtracks and cinematics. This data must be captured and encoded into digital files that can be read by MAME. Although MAME supports lossless compression of laserdisc data, it can be argued that the digital copy is not a perfect reproduction of the analog source.

    mame2_thumb1

A number of games use sound chips that have not yet been emulated successfully. These games require sound samples in WAV file format for sound emulation.

MAME additionally supports artwork files in PNG format for bezel and overlay graphics.

    Download.

For a while, the official Linux build of MAME was known as XMAME. While you can download still find distributions of XMAME for download, it is no longer being maintained, and has been replaced by SDLMAME as the official cross-platform variety of MAME since SDL is supported on a number of platforms including Linux, Windows, and Mac. There are several sources of SDLMAME including the official homepage, the Ubuntu distribution, the Debian repository, and Fedora RPMs.

All versions of SDLMAME are strictly command line driven, but there are numerous front-ends that are available for use with SDLMAME including the cross platform "MAME Plus! GUI" (linux version is Qt4 based), Qt4 based QMC2, Java based XMAME GUI, KDE based KXMAME, and Gnome based Gnome Video Arcade.

Top 25 Best and Free Games for Your Android Tablet | 2013

    0

Android tablets have been around for more than a year, but there still aren’t very many games designed to take advantage of a large screen. These games are not only playable on tablets as well as Android phones (at no extra charge, unlike iOS apps), they are all more fun to play on the big screen. Some of these Games were first available on Apple’s iPad, but as the number of Android tablets increases, we are seeing some companies release games for both formats at the same time.

Keep in mind that, try as we might to pick the best Android tablet games with broad tablet support, it is possible that any given game on our list might not be compatible with your tablet. If your favorite game hasn’t made our list, please let us know and we will take a look at it.

Once you know what games to play, you’ll need a tablet to play them on, so check out picks for the 2013 best and cheapest Android Tablets:

Part One. 2013 The Most Popular Free Android Tablet Games

    1. Dead Trigger (Free)

You just can’t beat a bit of first-person shooter action with zombies. There’s something relaxing and deeply satisfying about slaughtering wave after wave of the undead. Dead Trigger features the standard post-apocalyptic zombie uprising scenario and it looks great. The basic game is free, but you do have the option of splashing out on in-app purchases like better weapons and upgraded abilities.

    2. Bad Piggies HD (Free)

Those little green porkers from Angry Birds don’t spend all their time stealing eggs. Rovio has created a twist on its classic hit here that has the same format and cute cartoon art style, but introduces new gameplay. The addictive action challenges you to create weird and wonderful vehicles so you can reach all the collectibles across over 80 levels. This is good, clean fun for the whole family and it requires some creative thinking to score maximum stars.

    3. Fruit Ninja (Free)

There’s not a whole lot of games out there that manages to appeal to both ninjas and vegans, but Fruit Ninja manages to encompass the cross-section of those markets. Fruits come flying across the screen in vibrant, beautiful color. It’s your job to turn the flying produce into a sliced serving with quick swipes across the screen. It sounds ridiculous, but it’s truly one of the best games around, especially for those that really get a kick out of cutting up fruit.

    4. Neuroshima Hex Lite (Free)

Seize control of the post-apocalyptic remnants of humanity with Neuroshima Hex! A mobile port of the Polish board game of the same name, players take command of one of disparate factions of survivors attempting to destroy their rivals by laying down hex tiles representing troops. Set up your assault while blocking off your opponents, and when the battle tile is played, hell is unleashed. The game includes detailed rules and links to video tutorials, and supports 2-4 player battles against a competent AI or pass-and-play multiplayer. Unfortunately, Android players are still waiting for online multiplayer, which has already been implemented on iOS. The Lite version only allows you to play against the AI and with limited army access. The full version unlocks more armies with additional ones released as IAPs (in-app purchases).

    5. Words with Friends (Free)

Zynga’s Words with Friends is a multiplayer Scrabble-like game where players compete for the highest score by forming words on the board and taking advantage of previously laid down letters and special tiles in order to magnify the points of their words. Asynchronous multiplay allows you to play at your own pace, with up to twenty games open at any one time. Play with your friends and contacts, or against random strangers, and keep in touch with in-game chat messaging. Additionally, a notifications system informs you when your turn rolls around, allowing you to get right to it.

    6. Shadowgun: DeadZone (Free)

If you enjoyed the third-person shooter adventure Shadowgun, you might be interested in this multiplayer offshoot. You’re never going to replicate the shooter experience you’ll get with a console or desktop on a tablet, but this is a good effort. You can have up to 12 players shooting it out for supremacy in Deathmatch and there’s an alternative Zone Control mode which pits two teams of six against each other for control of the map. There’s a ranking system, weaponry to buy, and optional in-app purchases for cosmetic items.

    7. Heroes of Order And Chaos (Free)

Gameloft’s Heroes of Order and Chaos is an impressive attempt to bring MOBA (multiplayer online battle arena) gaming to mobile formats. Heroes of Chaos is a multiplayer game with players choosing specialized teams of heroes to lead against in battle against their enemies. New heroes cycle in and out every week, though players can choose to buy personal favorites for everyday use, and the game supports 5-on-5 sessions. Heroes of Order and Chaos has a surprisingly good interface with responsive movement and easily accessible icons.

    8. Triple Town (Free)

Spry Fox LLC’s Triple Town is a simple, addictive match three game. Players try to build the biggest town they can, earning points by matching three objects of the same kind in order to create the next object up the hierarchy. Three clumps of grass make a bush, three bushes make a tree, three trees to a house, etc. Along the way, you need to outwit giant bears who will get in the way of your construction plans. Free-to-play, Triple Town uses a time energy mechanic, though you can use in-game points to buy turns, or purchase unlimited turns with real money.

    9. Global Outbreak (Free)

Zooming out from the survivor’s view to the commander’s, we get Global Outbreak, a free-to-play strategy game where players take the role of mercenaries fighting the zombie apocalypse. The game plays out on the tactically and strategically as players direct their mercenaries through a top-down view, slaying zombie hordes and rescuing VIPs while taking command of the global conflict by building a network of helicopter bases and turrets to contain and eliminate zombie outbreaks. It’s the strategic level that is this game’s blessing and curse, as the worldmap system, while well designed, takes a fair amount of real time (constructing bases can take 15 minutes, and some research projects more than an hour). This means the game oscillates between tactical action segments and lots of thumb-twiddling in the slow worldmap mode. Being free-to-play, of course, there’s an option to spend real money to skip the tedium.

    10. Zenonia 5 (Free)

If you’ve never heard of the series, Zenonia 5 is a freemium Anime action RPG. You can choose from four character classes with a full range of customization options and skill charts to level up. It’s packed with missions and it offers PvP as well. If you’re a fan of RPGs and you want a great-looking example designed for tablets then this is it. The control system is well designed and if you get bored of grinding you can shortcut to the goodies you want via in-app purchases.

    11. Six Guns (Free)

A tumbleweed rolls across the screen. The clock in town rings out and the sun is just beginning to set. You walk out through the swinging doors of a saloon to meet a man in the middle of town, both of you ready to reach for the gun on your hip at any given moment. That’s the world you’ll enter in Six Guns. This title takes you back to the Wild West and allows you to roam through the old frontier on foot or horseback.

    12. Tiny Tower (Free)

No matter how much you loathe Donald Trump, you can’t deny that having multimillion-dollar buildings with your name on it would be pretty awesome. Tiny Tower lets you live this fantasy without the terrible Trump hair. Build from the ground up until you’ve got a building that is prime real estate for businesses and residents. This game is deceivingly deep, with an in-game social network for characters and completely customizable floor and room layout. It’s like Sim City if it took place in a single building.

    13. OnLive (free)

Why be limited to specific games when you can install the free OnLive app and play the latest console titles on your Android tablet? The service allows you to stream games to your tablet from remote servers. You can check out our OnLive hands-on impressions to find out more. There are a few touch-based options available, like L.A. Noire, or you can opt to buy the wireless controller and play games like Batman: Arkham City in all their glory.

Part Two. 2013 The Most Popular Paid Android Tablet Games

    14. Ski Safari ($0.99)

Can you stay ahead of the avalanche in this side-scrolling runner? You’ll need to build up speed by pulling off tricks and grabbing strange animals and vehicles, but make sure you avoid the obstacles. The game is easy to pick up and play, and there are tricky achievements to aim for that will keep you coming back for more. The game has a nice sense of humor and it’s well crafted so genre fans of titles like Canabalt and Tiny Wings should definitely grab this.

    15. Modern Combat 4: Zero Hour $0.99

Gameloft’s Modern Combat franchise is the closest we’ll get to a Call of Duty on an Android tablet for the moment. Sure, you could call it just another derivative modern war shooter, but it’s an excellently made one, hitting all the right points in graphic design, level design, gameplay, and online multiplayer. The singleplayer campaign? Well, the writing isn’t really anything groundbreaking or fantastic, but you can cut it some slack with the richness of the gameplay that Modern Combat 4: Zero Hour delivers.

    16. Angry Birds Star Wars HD ($2.99)

Angry Birds is a ubiquitous mobile game series that’s hit on a good formula of classic catapult demolition gameplay, accessible art style, and sound puzzle design to spawn a hit gaming franchise. The latest release, Angry Birds Star Wars, takes Angry Birds’ classic formula and adds new powers and puzzles inspired by George Lucas’ classic space opera series.

    17. Great Big War Game ($3.99)

Fancy yourself as a tactician? You have to try out the turn-based strategy classic, Great Big War Game. The cartoonish graphics are great, it has a bit of humor to it, but most importantly the gameplay is immersive. You’ll need some real tactical skill to emerge victorious from the 50 mission single player campaign. You can also indulge in a spot of multiplayer action so there’s plenty of content on offer to justify that price tag.

    18. Nes.emu ($4)

New games are great, but there’s a certain charm to those old titles we grew up on. Get nostalgic with NES.emu, a Nintendo Entertainment System Emulator built for your Android device. It’s all the fun of one of the greatest console experiences ever – and now it can come with you. From first party classics like Mario and Metroid to awesome ports like Bubble Bobble and Mega Man, just launching this app will feel like you’re stepping back into the 1980′s – without having to wear the terrible clothes.

    19. World of Goo ($4.99)

It looks gorgeous and it plays like a physics-based dream. World of Goo started its life as a Wii game, which makes it ideal for your Android tablet. If you’ve never seen this smash hit before it’s essentially a very weird and addictive puzzle game that came out a few years back. Just buy it, you won’t regret it. If you’re tempted then check out the Humble Bundle where you can pick up World of Goo, along with a bunch of excellent indie classics for your Android tablet, and give to charity at the same time.

    20. Shadowgun THD ($4.99)

You could call ShadowGun the mobile Gears of War. Bounty hunter John Slade is tasked with tracking down a mad scientist and his genetically engineered creations and putting a stop to his schemes using a high-tech arsenal of weaponry. All cliche, but you’re playing this game for the gory action, not the deep, soul-scouring plot. This third-person shooter delivers moody, gritty environments, tough enemy AI, and cover-based gameplay. It delivers hours of entertainment, and the expansions ‘ShadowGun: The Leftover’ and ‘ShadowGun: Deadzone’ offer more single player action and multiplayer mayhem respectively.

    21. Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP ($4.99)

SuperBrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP is an audiovisual experience wrapped around an adventure game. You take control of the Scythian as she explores a gorgeously rendered pixel-art fantasy world, doing battle against strange creatures with her sword and using the magic of sworcery to solve puzzles. The beautiful soundtrack is one of the compelling draws of the game, meshing perfectly with the gameplay and its visuals. The beautiful art and soundtrack are accompanied by the fun writing for the narrator Archetype, and the Scythian’s inner voice. This is best described as a silly hipster Conan. It doesn’t break through the fourth wall. It never bothered to build one in the first place.

    22. Minecraft Pocket Edition ($6.99)

Minecraft Pocket Edition is a mobile port of Mojang’s open-world sandbox classic that manages to capture much of the game’s charm while distilling it down for the mobile platform. Explore enormous, randomly generated worlds, get busy terraforming, building fanciful structures and Rube Goldberg machines, and even have a blast with local WiFi multiplayer options. While it doesn’t have everything the PC version has, Minecraft Pocket Edition, like it’s desktop sibling, is a game constantly in development, with new features always being worked into the game.

    23. N.O.V.A. 3 ($6.99)

N.O.V.A. 3 is the latest installment in Gameloft’s sci-fi shoot-em-up series. As Kal Wardin, you fight your way through stunningly rendered urban and alien landscapes with a deadly arsenal of weapons powered by your Mobile Armored Suit. N.O.V.A. 3 also offers fierce multiplayer battles with up to 12 players. The entire package is a thinly-veiled riff of marquee shooter franchises like Halo and Crysis, which isn’t a bad thing. Like many mobile shooters, controls can feel a bit crowded and take some getting used to. Otherwise, N.O.V.A. 3 is one of the best shooters on Android.

    24. Mass Effect Infiltrator ($7.82)

Mass Effect Infiltrator is a mobile tie-in to Electronic Arts’ Mass Effect 3 RPG shooter. Infiltrator puts players in the shoes of Randall Ezno, a Cerberus commando who turns against his masters once he finds out the shocking truth behind the conspiracy’s machinations. Armed with high-tech weaponry, stealth armor, and awesome biotic powers, players are a one-man army hell-bent on stopping Cerberus’s vile experiments. Progress in game can be tied into Mass Effect 3′s Galaxy at War mechanic, providing extra resources to a player’s campaign.

    25. Dead Space ($7.82)

The mobile Dead Space game is a tie-in to the hit video game series, with players taking on the role of Vandal, an agent of the Church of Unitology doing some less than savory assignments who gets caught up in a bloody Necromorph outbreak. Of course, this is the SF horror universe of Dead Space, and nothing is ever what it appears to be. Moody soundtracks, brooding environments, and tense, gory action keep the pressure on the player throughout. As Vandal’s sanity unravels, can the Necromorph outbreak be stopped?

    Arcade games.

    0

An Arcade game (or coin-op) is a coin-operated entertainment machine, usually installed in public businesses, such as restaurants, bars, and particularly amusement arcades.

Most arcade games are video games, pinball machines, electro-mechanical games, redemption games, and merchandisers (such as claw cranes).
The golden age of arcade video games lasted from the late 1970s to the mid-1990s.

While arcade games were still relatively popular during the late 1990s, the entertainment medium saw a continuous decline in popularity in the Western hemisphere when home-based video game consoles made the transition from 2D graphics to 3D graphics. Despite this, arcades remain popular in many parts of Asia as late as the early 2010s.

The term "arcade game" is also, in recent times, used to refer to a video game that was designed to play similarly to an arcade game with frantic, addicting gameplay.

The first popular "arcade games" were early amusement park midway games such as shooting galleries, ball toss games, and the earliest coin-operated machines, such as those that claim to tell a person their fortune or played mechanical music.

The old midways of 1920s-era amusement parks (such as Coney Island in New York) provided the inspiration and atmosphere of later arcade games.

In the 1930s, the first coin-operated pinball machines were made. These early amusement machines were distinct from their later electronic cousins in that they were made of wood, also they did not have plungers or lit-up bonus surfaces on the playing field, and used mechanical instead of electronic scoring readouts. By around 1977, most pinball machines in production switched to using solid state electronics for both operation and scoring.

Arcade games often have short levels, simple and intuitive control schemes, and rapidly increasing difficulty. This is due to the environment of the Arcade, where the player is essentially renting the game for as long as their in-game avatar can stay alive (or until they run out of tokens).

Games on consoles or PCs can be referred to as "arcade games" if they share these qualities or are direct ports of arcade titles. Many independent developers are now producing games in the arcade genre that are designed specifically for use on the Internet. These games are usually designed with Flash/Java/DHTML and run directly in web-browsers.

Arcade racing games have a simplified physics engine and do not require much learning time when compared with racing simulators. Cars can turn sharply without braking or understeer, and the AI rivals are sometimes programmed so they are always near the player (rubberband effect).

Arcade flight games also use simplified physics and controls in comparison to flight simulators. These are meant to have an easy learning curve, in order to preserve their action component. Increasing numbers of console flight video games, from Crimson Skies to Ace Combat and Secret Weapons Over Normandy indicate the falling of manual-heavy flight sim popularity in favor of instant arcade flight action.

Other types of arcade-style games include fighting games (often played with an arcade controller), beat 'em up games (including fast-paced hack and slash games), light gun rail shooters and "bullet hell" shooters (intuitive controls and rapidly increasing difficulty), music games (particularly rhythm games), and mobile/casual games (intuitive controls and often played in short sessions).

Today's arcades have found a niche in games that use special controllers largely inaccessible to home users. An alternative interpretation (one that includes fighting games, which continue to thrive and require no special controller) is that the arcade game is now a more socially-oriented hangout, with games that focus on an individual's performance, rather than the game's content, as the primary form of novelty. Examples of today's popular genres are rhythm games such as Dance Dance Revolution (1998) and DrumMania (1999), and rail shooters such as Virtua Cop (1994), Time Crisis and House of the Dead (1996).

In the Western world, the arcade video game industry still exists today but in a greatly reduced form. Video arcade game hardware is often based on home game consoles to facilitate porting a video arcade game to a home system; there are video arcade versions of Dreamcast (NAOMI, Atomiswave), PlayStation 2 (System 246), Nintendo GameCube (Triforce), and Microsoft Xbox (Chihiro) home consoles. Some arcades have survived by expanding into ticket-based prize redemption and more physical games with no home console equivalent, such as skee ball and whack-a-mole. Some genres, particularly dancing and rhythm games (such as Konami's Dance Dance Revolution), continue to be popular in arcades.
